The Proverbial Straw

I have a very full schedule this week, with every hour more or less allotted, but I’ve been killing it. Just knocking out assignments and workouts and moving on to the next thing. I was feeling pretty invincible. Then, last night around 10:30 p.m., I finished writing a story and pressed Save. And, the computer froze.

The computer’s been doing that a lot lately and, yes, clearly there is something wrong. But, the something wrong might just be that’s it’s a cheapass $500 Dell. So, I spent an hour trying to get it to unfreeze and save my to-that-point-unsaved story. If I had just force shut down the computer, it probably would have Autorecovered most of it, but I was trying to save everything. Cntrl-Alt-Dlt didn’t work, turned the whole screen black. Every program kept freezing and the Save As box would come up and then freeze. Finally, it says it’s Saving and I manually shut down the computer.

Turn it back on, open the file to email it to the person who needs it, and the whole document is blank. It hadn’t finished saving when I shut it down, so there is nothing. 0 bytes.

And, because it thinks it saved, it’s not available in the Recovered Documents or Unsaved Documents or Autorecover. There’s simply nothing to do. SOL.

But, because every hour or more or less allotted, I already had spent an hour-and-a-half I didn’t have trying to save it. And, I don’t have the time to redo it. That might have been the straw. Now, I feel the opposite of invincible. Time to go do my hard run!
